First Congregational United Church of Christ is a faith community that endeavors to practice the ministry of Jesus Christ by welcoming, accepting and affirming all people. We covenant to enjoy each other’s presence in ways that engage us in a nurturing environment that includes worship, education, fellowship, outreach, social action and peacemaking.
To create dynamic environment for worship, celebration and community and to incubate opportunities to serve our neighbors; to partner with others to alleviate housing and food insecurity, and racism. Our congregation firmly believes that by serving the community outside our congregation we serve God.
LOVE is the doctrine of our church
The quest of TRUTH is our sacrament
and SERVICE is our prayer.
To dwell together in peace; to seek knowledge in freedom;
to serve humankind in fellowship;
to the end that all souls shall grow into harmony with the divine.
Thus to we covenant with each other and with God.
As an Open & Affirming congregation, we covenant to welcome all persons, of all ages, races, backgrounds, orientations, and identities as equal participants in the life and ministry of this congregation.
We believe in God, who is still speaking.
WE believe in Jesus Christ, who lived among us.
We believe in the Holy Spirit who works in the world today.
We believe in the church, open to all.
We are journeying together to the beloved community.
The current First Congregational United Church of Christ of Gloversville, New York has its roots in the Kingsboro Church which was in the hamlet of Kingsboro, New York (now the Kingsboro district of the City of Gloversville, New York) and was founded as the union of congregational and presbyterian congregations in 1804. In 1852, the congregational congregation moved from Kingsboro to the center of ,what is now, the City of Gloversville, New York. The current church was built in 1894 with a tall bell tower. in early 1960’s, the sanctuary and front parts of the building were torn down and a new sanctuary and lounge area were built. The bell tower has remained through the years and new bells were purchased and dedicated in memory of his wife in 1923. In earlier times, the bells were used as Gloversville’s fire bell. The community can still hear the chimes ring throughout the day. Through the years, the congregation has grown and seen members leave and ministers have come and gone. Our church has always been in the forefront, recognizing and approaching new situations in the community and then doing something to meet those challenges. We initially housed a Planned Parenthood in our parsonage, created a counseling center which became The Family Counseling Center in Gloversville, started a senior Meals Program which grew into the Meals for the Elderly Program in Fulton County, Mountain Valley Hospice, and for 50 years sponsored a County-wide Art Show for all ages to name a few. Although in the last twenty years, we have seen our congregation dwindle, we have stayed active assuming the administration of another church’s Food Pantry operation. As in the earlier church, we remain active and involved in our church life and our community.
